About Experience Research Lab

Experience Research Lab (ERL) is an artist-led design studio creating spaces, artwork, and experiences that tell stories. Our work spans environmental graphics, public art, installations, brand experiences, murals, wayfinding, and custom fabrication.
We are looking for a Design + Media Content Intern to join our Seattle studio and work alongside our design team on both client projects and ERL’s own creative initiatives.

The Role

This is a multidisciplinary internship for someone interested in both design and storytelling. You’ll assist our team with graphic design, visual research, presentations, project production, and content creation while gaining exposure to how projects move from early ideas through fabrication and installation.

Depending on current projects and your interests, responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting graphic design, environmental graphics, artwork, and
    installation projects
  • Creating mood boards, visual research, concepts, and presentation materials
  • Assisting with production files, mockups, and project documentation
  • Developing graphics and content for ERL’s website, newsletter, and social channels
  • Photographing and filming projects, studio work, fabrication, and events
  • Editing short-form video, photography, and behind-the-scenes content
  • Helping develop project case studies and portfolio materials
  • Researching artists, materials, precedents, vendors, and creative
    opportunities
  • Supporting public art submissions, RFPs, and RFQs
  • Assisting with studio installations, events, fabrication, and other hands-on projects

Who We’re Looking For

We’re interested in students studying graphic design, visual communication, architecture, interior design, industrial design, media, photography, or related creative fields.

You don’t need to know everything. We’re looking for someone who is curious, visually minded, organized, and excited to learn.

Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is preferred. Photography, video editing, motion graphics, 3D software, or fabrication experience are all a plus.

Self-Initiated Project

Beyond day-to-day studio work, we want every intern to leave ERL with something they can truly call their own.

Together, we’ll identify a self-initiated project based on your interests and the opportunities within the studio. This could be an artwork, installation, short film, publication, experimental fabrication project, event, or something we haven’t thought of yet.

The goal is simple: take an idea from concept to completion and leave with something meaningful for your portfolio.

What You’ll Gain

You’ll get real-world experience inside a working multidisciplinary design studio, with opportunities to:

  • Contribute to active client and studio projects
  • Learn how ideas move from concept through design, fabrication, and installation
  • Work alongside designers, artists, fabricators, photographers, and creative partners
  • Build portfolio-worthy work
  • Receive mentorship and creative feedback from the ERL team
  • Experience the less glamorous, but equally important, realities of making ambitious creative work happen

How to Apply

Send your resume, portfolio or work samples, and a short introduction telling us about yourself and why you’re interested in ERL to hello@experienceresearchlab.com.

Please use “Design + Media Intern – [Your Name]” as the subject line. We’re less interested in a perfectly polished portfolio than we are in seeing how you think, what you’re curious about, and what you like to make.
