After your child brainstorms solutions, you can help him evaluate them. This does not mean telling him which one is correct.
- Ask questions such as, "Which idea do you think might work best?"
- When he chooses one, ask "What are the consequences of that choice?" or "What might happen then?"
- Help explore the possible consequences of each solution. This is where you can deal with the more unrealistic ideas, not by dismissing them, but by helping your child recognize what they would lead to.
- Let your child evaluate each possibility. Help him follow each idea to its conclusion, but do not choose the answer for him.
How to avoid problems in this step:
- Do not take over the process.
- Let your child make the decision.
- Help him see the consequences, but don't give advice. You are helping him develop his own internal advice.
