CERSE Staff Publish Research on Preparing STEM Graduate Students for Community College Teaching Careers

CERSE staff members Jana Foxe and Liz Litzler, along with additional NSF Eddie Bernice Johnson INCLUDES Aspire Alliance Regional Change members, published an article in the Community College Journal of Research and Practice: “Broadening Participation in STEM Community College Teaching: Deliberately Preparing Graduate Students.” The study evaluates the Regional Change Initiative, a network of Regional Collaboratives between two-year community colleges and four-year universities. Using Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), the research examines how mentored teaching practica and localized mentorship communities can help increase graduate students’ knowledge, self-efficacy, and interest in community college teaching, especially for students from underrepresented or historically marginalized groups. The authors found that well-supported collaboration between institutions can strengthen teaching skills and career interest in community college pathways, contributing to more diverse faculty representation.
