Chief Sealth International HS students visit UW

A group of Spanish/English bilingual students from Chief Sealth International High School visited UW on May 27, 2022. The visit, which included several academic events, was organized by CMTRL, as part of its mission to promote the teaching, learning, and use of heritage and minority languages in our state. After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were extremely happy to receive this group of multilingual students and their teacher in our campus.

The day started with a campus tour organized and led by Melisa Miralles (College of Education and Spanish and Portuguese Studies Department), David Cruz (Spanish and Portuguese Studies Department) and Ben Grewe (Spanish and Portuguese Studies Department).

In the afternoon, students had an opportunity to put their Spanish skills into use to interview our guests Teresa Luengo Cid and Lluvia Ellison-Morales. Teresa Luengo talked with the students about her work with the Latinx community at the King County Library system, and her writing projects and involvement with Seattle Escribe. Lluvia Ellison-Morales shared her experience working at King County Metro, where she leads the design and implementation of engagement strategies that involve community in decision making for capital projects.
