the problem

the solution
This project is being proposed as a new urban neighborhood. Due to its former life and settling of pollutants from other sites, preliminary studies have been conducted to ascertain the presence of heavy metals. These studies revealed arsenic and lead at levels above Act 2 residential soil standards.

Phytoremediation is being highly recommended as the site remediation method. Pumpkin vines, sunflowers, and Indian mustard plants are being investigated on a test site for lead removal rates. Grasses are expected to help break down any heavy hydrocarbons that might be present after a more intensive soil analysis is done. How to treat the arsenic is still under consideration, but is likely that phytoremediation and or bioremediation will be able to accomplish this task in one to five years.
The proposed neighborhood will eventually provide 500 new residential units and over 3 million square-feet of commercial and mixed-use space. A new public greenway will “be open to all citizens, each gaining from the significant environmental, social, programmatic and economic benefits of the larger Redevelopment Plan.” (website)
