Is taking doxycycline safe?

Doxycycline (doxy) is an antibiotic that is commonly used to treat everything from malaria to acne. It is typically well tolerated by a wide variety of patients. The most common side effects of doxycycline are:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash
  • Skin sensitivity to the sun
  • Esophageal irritation

This study will evaluate whether doxycycline is safe and well tolerated when used as an STI prophylaxis.

Where is the study taking place?

There are  two sites in San Francisco, the “Ward 86” HIV clinic and the San Francisco City Clinic.  There are also two sites in Seattle, the Madison HIV Clinic at HMC, and the SKC STD Clinic.

Who are the principal investigators?

Connie Celum and Annie Luetkemeyer are the co-principal investigators on this study.

Who would be a good fit for this study?

This study is looking for MSM and TGW who are taking HIV PREP or living with HIV. We are looking for people who have has at least one STI in the past year and who have one or more male sexual partners in the past year

Potential participants who may be a good fit for this  study  are people who are assigned men who have sex with men or transgender women and have a recent history of gonorrhea, chlamydia or syphilis.

Will participants be paid?

Participants will receive $25 per scheduled study visit
