Description: This species bears close resemblance to L. laevis var. amphora (Williamson) from which it differs chiefly in having its surface marked by longitudinal striae which are well defined over the greater part of the cell becoming less distinct toward the upper portion.

Expanded description from Vázquez Riveiros and Patterson (2008): Test free, unilocular, elongate, circular in cross section, widest near mid-point, wall calcareous, hyaline; 16 to 20 discontinuous and occasionally anastomosing longitudinal costae that extend from base to neck, in some specimens costa unite to form an elongate process in aboral region; neck narrow and elongate comprises less than one-half of test-length; aperture small and circular with phialine lip.

Distribution:  In Puget Sound P. gracilis is rare and found in the northernmost embayments and around the San Juan Islands.

Description from Cushman and McCulloch (1950): elongate flask-shaped test, the basal end acute or slightly rounded, the apertural end much extended as in the type.  The surface of the test has numerous high elongated costae, some very long extending from the base of the test to the aperture with others limited to the body of the test and ending at the base of the neck.

Remarks: Cushman and McCullogh (1950) noted that this description, based on Ruess’s original type is different from Lagena costata var. amphora Williamson, 1848.

Distribution: Rare in Puget Sound
