Genus Quinqueloculina

 Genus Quinqueloculina d’Orbigny, 1826

Loeblich and Tappen (1962) proposed to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature the use of the generic name Quinqueloculina as a nomen conservandum because of its common usage, and because of the cosmopolitan distribution of its numerous species.

Description: by Loeblich and Tappan (1964): Test coiled with chambers one-half coil in length and alternating regularly in 5 planes of coiling 72o apart, but with successive chambers in planes 144o apart so that 3 chambers are visible from exterior on one side of the test and 4 visible from opposite side; wall calcareous, porcelaneous, imperforate, with inner pseudochitinous layer, rarely with some agglutinated grains added to exterior; aperture terminal, rounded, with simple or bifid tooth.

D’Orbigny did not provide a description of this species and the type figure was illustrated in Parker, Jones and Brady, 1871, pl. 8, fig.  15 (see Ellis and Messina Catalogue # 18546).

Description from Cushman (1917): Test short and stout, about as long as wide, in front view orbicular, chambers in transvers section roughly triangular, the periphery bluntly angled, sides straight or slightly convex; sutures distinct, wall smooth; apertural end not contracted or produced; aperture elongate narrow with a tooth bifid at the tip in front view projecting slightly above the border of the aperture.  Length, averaging 0.75 mm.

Remarks: Q. vulgaris is epifaunal, free or attached to plants (McGann, 2007). It is a common species around the Pacific margin.

Distribution:  Cushman (1917) noted that Q. vulgaris is one pf the most common quinqueloculinids in the central and eastern North Pacific.
