MPH in Global Health

The University of Washington’s Department of Global Health Master of Public Health (MPH) program is one of the premier global health programs in the world.  The program offers a social justice and practical skills-based framework so graduates can make a difference wherever they work. Students exit with core public health skills in research, analytic methods, proposal development, management, implementation science, health metrics and evaluation, and a deeper understanding of the social, economic, and political determinants of health. Our students and alumni tell us these are some of reasons they choose the University of Washington:

  • interdisciplinary approach to global health issues
  • collaborative, cohort-based programming with 35-50 new students annually, including approximately 1/3 foreign students, all with prior global health experience
  • accessible faculty with decades of experience in global health who combine teaching, research, and practice
  • partnerships with organizations locally and around the world
  • funding for under-represented students

Doctor of Global Health Leadership and Practice (DrGH)

The DrGH addresses a documented need for advanced degree programs that generate practice-based leadership skills for global health settings as opposed to more commonly available programs that focus largely on research skills. The DrGH degree program will improve the skills of global health leaders in planning, catalyzing resources; motivating teams; strengthening national policy; and, implementing, managing, and evaluating evidence-based programs in a variety of global health settings. DrGH graduates will gain the ability to understand and successfully navigate and work across diverse organizations and settings, including Ministries of Health (MOH), multilateral and bi-lateral agencies (e.g., the World Health Organization [WHO], the US Agency for International Development [USAID]), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), foundations, academic institutions, and private sector organizations.

PhD in Health Metrics and Implementation Science

In this unique interdisciplinary program, students develop skills through a combination of didactic courses, seminars, and research activities including primary data collection and analysis. The PhD program is comprised of a core curriculum in advanced quantitative methods, epidemiology, population health measurement, impact evaluations, and implementation science methods.

The PhD program specializes in two areas of emphasis, metrics and implementation science. Metrics is dedicated to providing students with advanced training in independent, rigorous, and timely scientific measurements to accelerate progress on global health by identifying the world’s major health problems, assessing how well society addresses these problems, and guiding resource allocation to maximize health improvements. Implementation science focuses on the systematic application of scientific approaches to ask and answer questions regarding evidence of intervention efficacy to implementation. This science addresses how interventions can be scaled-up with greater speed, fidelity, efficiency, quality, and coverage.

Upon graduation, students will have acquired the knowledge and skills required to make meaningful and innovative contributions to the field of global health.
