Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere

  Reason for Selection

Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere is a relatively quiet piazza that still has a lot of activity during most of the day. In the early morning light the piazza is practically empty except for a few cafes setting up for the day's business. The cafe directly across from the Church in the far right corner pulls its fresh baked pastries out of the oven at around 7:30. A cool morning is great for enjoying a nice hot cappuccino and hot apple pastry at a table al fresco. The beautiful fountain in the center provides the calming sound of running water. It’s a great place to think and write.

At night, several restaurants are open and an orange juice bar are open. The center fountain is large and cicular providing ample seating for people wanting to enjoy the space but not wanting to eat. Its not too quiet either; there are plenty of people around.

  Comparison

Unlike the boisterous market in the Campo, Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere is a quite in the morning. During the day it’s an easy place to sit and think. Enough noise to that its not too quiet, but still empty enough not to have to many distractions.

There is not the party like atmosphere of the Campo or the other piazzas with multiple bars nor the tacky tourist circus of Piazza Navona or the Trevi Fountain. It's less crowed than Piazza del Pantheon but is still a happening evening hotspot.

  Impression

When I think of Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, I'll carry with me the smell of those fresh baked morning pastries and the taste of the foamy cappuccino in a quiet piazza. Is there a better way to start the day?
