Il Fornaio

  Location and Hours

The Italian bakery is located at 4 Via dei Baullari, about a 2 minute walk from the Campo di Fiori. Athough the bakery does not advertise hours, it is open everyday from very early in the morning to around 8 at night.

  Price Range

A typical purchase for one person would range between €1.50 to €3.00. The bakery sells pastries, biscotti and slices of pizza as well as loaves of bread for these prices.

  Time of Visit

I visted the bakery once a year and a half ago and about three times during the past week. One of these visits was in the afternoon around 3:30pm and the other two were at about 8:30am.

  Description

Il Fornaio is casual and the size of a typical bakery or pizzaria in Italy. Although there are no tables inside nor outside of the establishment, the bakery is meant for take-out. Early morning is the best time to visit the bakery because all of the fresh bread and pastries are coming out of the oven. During the afternoon, pizza becomes the highlight of the display window. Like most bakeries, when you order, the person over the counter will give you your choice but you then must pay at the cashier. Drinks are also served in a very cold refrigerator.

  Menu

Apple dumpling, biscotti, spinach and cheese pastry, margarita pizza (over a few visits of course)

  Review

My favorite pastry in the bakery is the apple dumpling. A small apple is wrapped in a soft pastry dough and then cooked in the oven. The pizza is very good however they offer only a limited selection of toppings. The spinach and cheese pastry slice is the only thing I would not recommend, it is extrememly rich and not very flavorful. The quality of food overall is excellent. The bakery serves only fresh, out-of-the-oven breads etc.
