This phrase would fall under the Emergencies, health, and general travel categories because it asks for someone who can speak English. This could be for medical assistance or just to ask for directions.

  Story

I learned this phrase from a friend who lives in Northern Italy. I thought it would be useful for any case in which English would be necessary to understand the situation, such as a medical emergency. I originally learned the phrase as "Do you know someone who speaks English or Spanish?" but shortened it to just English for this assignment.
This phrase is one that I have used more often that I would like to admit. Though I try to use my Italian as much as possible, during complex occasions or moments of utter misunderstanding, asking if someone speaks English has proven very helpful for me. For example, when I was trying to buy tickets to the Roma soccer game, asking if the two German gentlemen spoke English rewarded me with two tickets. The phrase isn't always useful, however. The clerk at the Roma counter, for instance, when asked if she spoke English, shook her head and continued counting the number of tickets she had already placed on the counter for me. In medical situations though, speaking with a doctor who speaks English can be essential.
