Sant'Ignazio

  Reason for Selection

When you walk into Sant'Ignazio the ceiling pops out at you. The frescos that coverthe ceiling require you to take a second look to notice that they are simply paintings and not sculptures hanging from the ceiling. And most impressively the fake dome just draws you into the church so that you can further inspect the dome that even when you try to see it as a flat image you have a hard time actually doing so because the dome was painted on with such great skill.

What makes this different from other churches is the falseness of the extravagence of the church. While other churches are all gold and frescos with a real dome painted with images from the Bible, Sant'Ignazio is more impressive with its fake dome that owes itself to the lack of money, the lack of extravagence.

  Description

The dome is one of the particular things that one notices upon visiting Sant'Ignazio. When we visited it was during the morning hours and so it was not crowded which is the best time to see a church especially if you want to be able to look up at your leisure. The other people there seemed to be there less for the tourist reasons and more for the religious reasons. And the tourists that were there seemed to have come one their own and not as part of a large group, which to me means that they had done some reading and learned something about the church to have drawn them to it. Therefore they had a geniune interest in the church instead of being blind followers of a flag on the stick.

  Memorable Visit

The first time that I visited this church was memorable because I actually got more involved with the frescos on the ceiling than with the dome. I did not notice the dome till about 15 minutes into the visit and so I found it very impressive that for 15 minutes the dome painting had fooled me.

Sant'Ignazio is one of my favorite churches because they lacked the money to build an actual dome and had to get creative in order to accomplish the orginal design plan. The creativity is what I find most interesting, it sets it apart from the other churches.
