Palatine Hill

  Ancient Image

Looking out over the stadium you can see one of the best examples of the extravagence of the Roman emperors. The space that the emperors set aside for their use and amusement is very noticeable when you see the stadium. The fallen columns that are there now are just fragments of the wealth that the emperors had. The exact use of the stadium is unknown and some think that it was simply used as a garden, but even if it was just a garden it was an impressively large one that was just one emperors way to show off his wealth and outdo his predecessors.

As you walk in from the entrance in the Forum there is a fountain with lush greenery crawling up and around it. This fountain is the image that best defines the Palatine hill today, an area of ruins that have been well kept compared to the other sights/ruins around Rome. It is just a glimpse of what to expect as you walk further into the ruins and the effects of tourism. The only hill that you have to pay to, this hill is currently and entirely meant for tourism and the well-kept nature of it makes this obvious.

Stadium on Palatine Hill

Here is the stadium with the fallen columns. If you look atthe columns you can get a sense of the scale of the stadium. And on the sides you can see the bases of columns that give you an idea of the number of columns that lines the outer edge of the stadium. This image is a good example of what the Palatine was like in ancient times by giving you an idea of the extravagence that Roman emperors went to in order to outdo each other. The greenness of the grass also shows how well kept the ruins on the Palatine hill are. Admist the intense heat of the summer the grass has still been kept green, which would require lots of watering by groundskeepers.
