I looked this phrase up after talking to an Italian student. We were each trying to ask the other person where they go to school, what they're doing in Italy, and what they study at school. Every time I've talked to anybody about studying in Italy, in fact, they've always wanted to know what I'm learning and they probably always ask with this phrase.
