Down by the River

  Location

This site is easy to find, but I'm sure many of us have not spent much time walking along the Tiber. To find the spot, go down to the Ponte Cestio, this is the bridge across Tiber Island. Go down below street level on the Trastevere side. When you are standing underneath the bridge walk towards the pier (the support for the bridge), you'll notice that this is the one of the only bridges that you can walk out to the piers without getting wet. When you are at the pier walk around on the narrow pieces of marble until you are standing over the water. Have a seat and relax.

  Description

You are standing or sitting underneath a bridge. There is nothing between you and falling in the Tiber, but there is also nothing around to distract you. The time of day doesn't matter much, the noise of the water and lights on the river at night maintain a reasonably constant atmosphere. Although you may want to be there when the weather is warmer, since it will be more pleasant by the river. You'll notice the river flows fastest here. It is directed around the west side of Tiber Island only and is at its narrowest underneath this bridge.

  Story of Discovery

I was out looking for prostitutes. On advice from the Professor my first spot to check was down by the river. I happened to be walking next to this bridge and noticed that there was a small path that went around the pier.
Although I didn't see ANY prostitutes, I did find this pleasant spot.

  Element of Interest

This location is interesting because of the noise. Rome is a very loud city and the Lungotevere (the street along the Tiber) is noisy even at night. On this narrow ledge, the only noise is from the river echoing under the bridge. Although it is louder that the traffic, the noise is natural and its constant roar makes it seem to be a much calmer situation than within the city.

Ponte Cestio
Ponte Cestio

Since Ponte Cestio goes across Tiber island, it is the shortest bridge in Rome. The picture is of a simple bridge, without any unusual features. This bridge is special only for the path that lends itself to walking over the river.
