  Site History

The construction of the theater was started when Julius Caesar returned from war in 45-44 BC. Caesar wanted to build a theater that would be bigger and better than the one built by the recently defeated Pompey. To do this, he expropriated the land and property in the area, and destroyed buildings to allow space for construction. This upset many people, and when Caesar was killed a few months later, the construction of the theater was stopped.
Work was started again on the construction of the theater in 22 BC, by Augustus Caesar. Though it was not yet completed, the theater started being used in 17 BC. In 13 BC, it was named for Marcellus, Augustus' deceased nephew.

  Elements of Interest

The facade of the theater originally had three levels, but only parts of the two lower levels can still be seen today. Other parts of the theater are missing as well, because they were taken off ot the theater and used in the construction of other sites around Rome.
