  Connection to Research

The Galleria Borghese is my favorite art museum thus far in Italy. I had seen pictures of many pieces in the gallery, but seeing them in person was truly mind blowing. The Bernini sculptures were absolutely amazing...the most moving works of art I have seen on the trip. The paintings by Titian, Raphael, and Caravaggio were also astounding. Pictures of art work in text books never do the pieces justice, and I am thankful for the wonderful opportunity to see them in real life.

  Element of Interest

My favorite piece was the "David" sculpture, which captured the figure in the instant of his heroic slaying of Goliath. The movement to the piece was remarkable...David's arms flexed and torso twisted in action. It appeared as if the character would spring to life at any moment, hurling the stone through the glass of the Borghese window. His facial expression was so life like, a look of determination set on conquering his giant enemy. Of all the David depictions I have seen in Italy (Donatello, Michaelangelo, etc.), this sculpture was my favorite.

  Questions

Are all of Bernini's works religiously themed?

The answer is no. Bernini's two best works in the gallery are depictions of Roman and Greek myths, and do not reflect Christian ideologies. The "Apollo and Daphne" is the most amazing work of art I have ever seen. The intricately designed sculpture portrays the myth of Daphne being pursued by Apollo, only to be turned into a tree moments before capture.

Apollo and Daphne

Rape of Proserpine

David

These are the prizes of the Borghese Gallery. Bernini is probably the best marble sculptor that has ever lived, and these three statues are his best work. The "Apollo and Daphne" is an astonishing work of intricacy, detail, and perspective. One can see the unfolding of the myth by walking around the sculpture and viewing it from different angles. By far, my favorite piece of artwork in Italy. The "David" and "Rape of Proserpine" are just as impressive.
