Giancolo

  Location

Giancolo hill is the ridge located on the western side of the Tiber river...directly adjacent from the ancient city center. It spans from the Vatican to Trastevere, and there many entrances to the park from either side. From Trastevere, head up Via Garibaldi, and follow the contour of the hill upwards. Just make sure you are going up and you will eventually reach the summit. The road on top is Via del Giancolo. From the Vatican follow the signs from Piazza di Rovere and you will eventually snake your way to the top.

  Description

In my opinion this is the best panoramic view of the city. It is the highest hill in all directions, and sits directly above the city center which makes for excellent city scape vistas. All the major landmarks are visible from this height. Although all times of day are great to visit, the evenings often become crowded with smoochy couples kindling their romantic flames at sunset. Sunrise would have to be my favorite time to visit.

  Story of Discovery

A week before school started, I was aimlessly roaming the streets alone. Knowing I would be back to see all the major sights with class, I quickly glanced over the tourist traps, and spent the rest of my afternoons park hopping, looking for the perfect siesta spot. After a quick peak in St. Peter's basilica, I grabbed a loaf of bread, some cheese, and water from the near by grocier, and headed towards the hill. I chose Via del Mura Aurelie, as it looked like the easiest path to the city, but which proved to be a serious mistake. The street parallels the outside of the ancient city wall, and I hiked for at least two miles...the length of the park...before I could cross back to the Roman side. In the seering August heat this was no fun. Once I finally reached the top, I sprawled out on the grass, ate lunch, and took a great nap on the peak of the Eternal city.

  Element of Interest

It is the best view in all of Roma. To understand the full scope of the ancient city it is necessary for one to climb the summit and soak in the view.

Sunrise over Rome

Giancolo is the best place to view the Roman cityscape. This photo was taken at sunrise, looking east over the Eternal City. There are many landmarks visible in the early morning haze, including the infamous capital building.
