Hill |

Giancolo hill, outlining the western edge of Rome...across the Tiber river from the ancient city center.

Ancient Image |

The hill was the outline of the city perimeter. The western edge of the hill is fortified by a large ancient wall, used for protection during Renaissance times. From this point, the entire western side of Rome could be defended from attack. I know this wall well. I decided to approach Giancolo from the wrong side, and got stuck on the outside of the city wall for over a mile. Looking from the bottom up, penetrating the wall seems impossible.

Today, the hill is a hotspot for romantic couples at sunset. Visit the hill anytime after five in the evening, and you will be subjected to lots of face sucking and tonsil hockey.

These images are of sunrise over Rome. Giancolo is the perfect spot to watch sunrise, as the hill faces east, over the city of Rome. Sunsets are also very pleasant, but do not quite have the same dramatic effect.
