  Church

The church of Santa Maria in Trastevere is by far my favorite in Rome.

  Reason for Selection

The ambience of this church is the most spiritual setting I have experienced on this trip. It is the perfect mix of divine glory and religious modesty. Santa Maria displays all the beauty and power of the Catholic church, without being a gaudy display of wealth. The 22 mismatched marble mismatched ancient Roman marble columns also contribute to the powerful spiritual feeling of the church.

  Description

The lighting defines the mood of Santa Maria in Trastevere. A very subdued, mellow natural light creates teh spiritual atmosphere of the church. The entire front of the church is covered with golden frescoes which shimmer in the sunlight, casting rays of divine light onto the parisheners in the congregation.

  Memorable Visit

Watching people pay respects to the St. Francis statue. I really liked the personal connection made to the Catholic religion through this icon. Worshippers wrote notes of thanks and praise and attached them to the statue, linking them directly to God. It reminded me of Buddhist ceremonies I witnessed in Thailand.
