The artwork was as beautiful as I anticipated, but the atmosphere of the museum was very disappointing. They packed so many tour groups into the museum, that it was hard to enjoy the priceless works of art, and I ended up leaving before I saw the whole collection because I could not tolerate the crowd any longer. The Raphael rooms and Sistine chapel were especially bad.

  Element of Interest

The collection of Egyptian artifacts was the section of museum which interested me the most. I did not know there were so many pieces to this collection, and it came as a pleasant surprise. My favorite were the three thousand year old mummies. It is hard to comprehend how an ancient civilization had the knowledge to preserve bodies so thousands of years later they would still be fully intact with hair, skin, and fingernails looking the way they did the day the body was buried.

  Questions

Is the Sistine Chapel used for any religious ceremony today?

The answer from our visit to the Sistine Chapel appears to be no. The chapel has been converted into a tourist fire trap, with no indications of it being a religious auditorium to be seen anywhere. It seems the only purpose the chapel has left is to sell musuem tickets for the Vatican, by luring thousands of visitors into the complex each day.

These images show the artistic glory of the Sistine Chapel by the Master, Michaelangelo. It was very hard to enjoy this works of art in the Vatican since the chapel was jammed full of tour groups, but the work remained nonetheless impressive. The size of these photos does not do the painted wall and ceiling justice, since each covers over sixty square feet. It is good to analyze these representations before you go, however, since you probably won't want to spend much time soaking in the meaning with a tribe of people pushing their way through the Sistine Chapel.
