Windows 2000

• “Insert…Symbol”
  

• In Word, use AutoCorrect to replace something like \barredi\ with ɨ. A macro that adds these entries is available for download.
  

• Seriously consider saving your document as RTF.
  

Mac OS X

• In TextEdit, use the “Unicode Hex” input method. Hold down the Option key and type the hexidecimal code for the character (the code chart is downloadable).
  

Other input methods are also possible.
