Message from Jessica

"Thank you to all who came out to The Fosters on Friday. It was a special evening and everyone seemed to have a great time.

In case you missed it, we had more than 200 students and Blue Dots, plus a few special guests from the MBA Program Office, for our "Greenhouse Gala" at the UW Center for Urban Horticulture. After a cocktail reception, our Class of 2018 emcees, Seth Bergeson and Rachel Hester opened the awards ceremony with a hilarious rap about the MBA experience. Then they introduced the Class of 2019 emcees, Afa Malu and Kate Neupert, and the four of them hosted a fantastic awards presentation. After dinner, Fleetwood WACC delivered its final performance, in a greenhouse full of adoring fans. Bassist John Stewart made his vocal debut and I'm still not sure if Jordan Wall managed to catch his plane on Friday night after staying late to give an encore performance. After we cleared out of the venue, the good times continued all the way to Kate's Pub, where Foster more or less took over the bar at the end of the night.

The Fosters is a cherished tradition of our program, where we come together to recognize the many student leaders who shape our culture and make things happen. The whole thing is funded, planned, and executed each year by an all-student team of volunteers, representing both full-time classes. It takes a lot of time and energy to bring it together and your peers do all of it. If you see any of The Fosters Committee in the halls this week, please take a moment to thank them for their hard work. Specifically:

  • Giulia Pellegrino and Alli Green planned the theme and decorations
  • Elaine Ji, Min Kim, Jamie Young, Catherine LaPlant, and Asal Mirsalimi arranged the catering and bar service (special shout-out to Elaine for her aggressive negotiations to manage the catering budget; and to Jamie for working with the venue over Spring Break when we nearly lost our contract)
  • Masha Makarenkova, Shilpa Bothra, Scott Brimacombe, Daniela El Saghir, and Wen Lee planned the awards, designed the commemorative gifts, ran the voting process, and recruited the emcees
  • Ari Varley, John Turk, and Carol Ou managed all the odds and ends, including that amazing photo backdrop, the DIY floral station, and arranging the volunteer crew on the event day
  • Tanay Chaturvedi, Yao Zhang, and David Kim managed all the communications for the event, including ticket sales, the Facebook page, and all those MBA emails
  • Rose Long-O'Donnell sat in traffic and fielded urgent phone calls and text messages to get the beer and appetizers to the venue
  • John Stewart, Rachel Hester, Roberto Ortiz, Jon Randelman, Jordan Wall, Erkan Tas, and April Munoz-Adcock (evening class of 2018) spent hours before the ceremony setting up in an unusually noisy venue and gave a killer final Fleetwood WACC performance
  • and a whole crew of people signed up for volunteer shifts throughout the evening to set up, decorate, check guests in, and clean up afterward

In other words, this was a massive team effort that has been in the works since February and it came together beautifully.

I know this is going to sound cheesy, but as the chair of the Fosters Committee, I am sincerely honored to have been able to play a part in this tradition before I graduate in a few short weeks. It was my way of giving back to a program that has meant so much more to me than I ever expected from an MBA. Leaving the bar on Friday night was bittersweet for me, as I know that was my last time at The Fosters and one of the last times both classes will be together. I sincerely hope everyone who came was able to enjoy all the love and gratitude in the air and I hope you had as much fun as I did.

Foster, you really are the best."

Jessica Raasch
