Dr. Kraus is the clerkship site director. The clinical mini-CEX can be performed with any of the above faculty. Please tell the ward attending if you have any specific goals for the month so that your experience is as good as possible.

Clinical Experience

Inpatient experience: The majority of your time will be spent on the inpatient service either as the ward student or consult student. The student is expected to follow their assigned patients from time of admission/consultation until discharge or the resolution of the consult issue, write daily progress notes, and be involved in writing medication, laboratory and diagnostic testing orders. A reasonable guideline is to follow 1-3 patients at any time. There are no weekend or night call responsibilities.  Documenting in the EMR for medical students is handled differently at every hospital, in every department and on every service.  Here is the UW medical student notes policy.

Clinic experience: In most instances, the student will be given autonomy to work up new patients in clinic, and shadow the preceptor for return patients. However, be open for variation. The goal is two ½-day clinics per week. Other opportunities include observing/reading EMGs, EEGs, and evoked potentials. Clinics run from 8AM to noon, or 1PM to 5PM. There are no weekend or night clinic responsibilities.
