Hawaii Woodlands (HI-W) Series
NOTES TO USERS:
1. The sites in this series are arranged in order of increasing understory vegetation loading (i.e., graminoids, shrubs, and forbs).
2. A list of scientific and common species names can be found in the introductory notes for Hawaii.
3. Myoporum sandwicense was considered a shrub in the grassland and shrubland series and a tree in the woodland and forest series owing to its variable physiognomic form.
4. The marker in these photographs is a 1-foot square, and the pole is painted in contrasting colors at 1-foot intervals. The pole is 6 feet tall and 30 feet from the camera.
5. Sampling and photography occurred in November 1999 and July 2000.
6. Trace species coverage is indicated by (t).
7. Standing tree biomass was not calculated; tree seedling biomass was added to shrub biomass.
8. Unlike the bound publication where all masses were reported in tons per acre, the digital photo series reports understory biomass in pounds per acre.
