Multilingual Learning Communities

Launching in Autumn 2024!

Multilingual writers bring considerable linguistic skills and resources to their studies at the University of Washington. Through Multilingual Learning Communities (MLCs), the OWRC seeks to support multilingual writers in critically reflecting upon and engaging their skills/resources in a collaborative, supportive environment. MLCs offer weekly, tutor-led group support for self-identified multilingual writers in writing and reading intensive courses.

MLCs are meant to help you support your classroom learning, develop translation strategies, combine your personal goals with your academic goals, and create a learning community. If you join a MLC, you’ll be paired with 3-5 fellow students and 1 tutor-facilitator from our center. You will work together to practice translation strategies, negotiate the expectations of writing class assignments, and develop collaboration skills. Your group will meet once a week for an hour, for 6 weeks throughout the term.

MLCs can cover many topics, including:

  • Making intentional language choices;
  • Participating in class discussions and everyday translation activities;
  • Understanding and negotiating with assignments/instructor feedback;
  • Locating additional support services.

Check back in September 2024 to sign up for an MLC!
