Once a decision is made regarding what type of appliance is needed and how it is to be used, the next phase of the space maintenance protocol involves creating the appliance. Four steps are involved in fixed appliance therapy: 1. Fitting the bands, 2. Impression taking, 3. Appliance fabrication, 4. Cementation.

In the case of removable appliances, impression taking is the first step since bands will not be used.
