Don't Feed the Monster on Tuesdays!

CONCEPT: Self Esteem

BRIEF SUMMARY

Read a story about a little green monster that sometimes makes us feel bad about ourselves. Learn how to not "feed" the green monster, but instead build our self-esteem.

OBJECTIVES

After completing this activity, children will be able to:

  • define self-esteem
  • list three ways to build their self-esteem or to feel good about themselves
  • list three ways to build their self-esteem in relation to their PKU diet

METHODS

Read the poem "What Makes You So Special?" Do the children have any comments about the poem?

Read the story Don't Feed the Monster on Tuesdays! by Adolph Moser.

Lead a discussion with children, asking questions such as:

  • What is self-esteem?
  • What are ways that you can build self-esteem and feel good about yourself?
  • How does that make you feel?
  • How do you feed the green monster?
  • How does that make you feel?
  • How can you increase your self-esteem when you have PKU?
  • In what ways is your life different because of PKU?
  • What is the most difficult part about having PKU? What do you do to deal with this?

Distribute the worksheet. Allow the children time to complete it on their own. Discuss their answers.
