MEDCH 327/ PCEUT 327 – The Science of Drugs

Time and Location: MWF, SPRING 2020, 11:30-12:20, WFS 201

Format: In-class lectures if campus opens + Zoom live and recording, online quizzes and exams

Course Description: An undergraduate elective course that will introduce students to medicinal

chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences. Geared towards sophomore, junior and senior students

majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical engineering, public health and other

health sciences, and related fields. Science elective for chemistry, biochemistry, and related majors.

Students completing this course will be able to do the following:

§ Briefly summarize the history of medicine and

some of the drugs that changed the world

§ Apply Organic chemistry concepts to drug

development process

§ Explain the drug discovery to drug approval

processes

§ Describe various drug classes, and routes of drug

interactions and toxicity

§ Understand how the body affects drug absorption and

routes of metabolism

§ Describe what factors define the exposure to drugs and

the duration of drug action

§ Describe how genetic factors change individual response

to drugs
