Hey folks,
Just wanted to pass on the information for the Bioethics Grand Rounds this week. If you’re interested in the Bioethics and Humanities minor you can check out the requirements at www.depts.washington.edu/bhdept/ Hope to see you tomorrow!

We invite you to join us for Bioethics Grand Rounds, co-sponsored by the
Department of Bioethics & Humanities and the Ethics Advisory Committee at the University of Washington Medical Center.
“Promoting Responsible Collection and Use of Residual Clinical Specimens in
Research: the Washington Phenotyped Biospecimen Resource”
Wednesday, November 16th, 2011 5 – 6 p.m.
Health Sciences Building, T-739 Reception to follow
Our topic is presented by John T. Slattery, Ph.D., vice dean for research
and graduate education and S. Malia Fullerton, D.Phil, associate professor in the Department of Bioethics & Humanities.
With funding from the Life Sciences Discovery Fund, the UW will soon develop
the research infrastructure through which clinically annotated (phenotyped) specimens obtained in UW Medicine hospitals and clinics will be made
available at minimal cost and with minimal effort to biomedical investigators across the State of Washington. While this new research
infrastructure promises to accelerate research, it also poses complicated questions with respect to public engagement, patient authorization, and
secure stewardship of protected health information. The speakers will describe efforts to anticipate and proactively address these, and related,
concerns posed by the development of the Washington Phenotyped Biospecimen Resource (WPBR).
Dr. Slattery is vice dean for research and graduate education at the UW
School of Medicine and chair-elect of the Pharmaceutical Sciences section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Prior to that he
was the associate vice president for academic affairs and dean of the Graduate School at the University of Indiana and a professor of medicine,
biology, pharmacology and toxicology. Previously, Dr. Slattery was a professor of pharmaceutics in the UW School of Pharmacy and a member of the
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He directed the UW’s Office of Scholarly Integrity and chaired the Animal Care Committee.
Dr. Fullerton is Associate Professor of Bioethics and Humanities at the
University of Washington School of Medicine. She received a D.Phil in Human Population Genetics from the University of Oxford and later re-trained in
Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications research with a fellowship from the NIH National Human Genome Research Institute. Her work explores scientists’
understandings of human genetic variation and its relation to disease risk, the use of racial and ethnic constructs in the conduct and interpretation of
genetic research, and the responsible incorporation of genomic methodologies into broader programs of health disparities research. She also conducts
research exploring research participant perspectives on data-sharing, research use, and result return in the context of genome-wide association
studies. She holds adjunct positions in the Departments of Genome Sciences and Epidemiology, is a co-investigator of the UW Center for Genomics and
Healthcare Equality, and serves as a member of the Regulatory Support and Bioethics Core of the UW Institute of Translational Health Sciences.
