Dear Advisors for the Health Professions: While at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2007, I started a summer program that has sent nearly 80 undergraduates, to date, to my native Azores Islands, Portugal. The program is now a separate organization, independent of UNC-Chapel Hill, and the program’s students have also come from Harvard, Brown, U. Chicago, Cambridge, etc. This year alone we’ve already received applications from Harvard, Brown, Yale, WashU, BC, UNC, Cambridge, Toronto, McGill, among others. I’d love if you could forward this message and make the program visible to your students, particularly your pre-med, nursing, and other pre-health students, since our most popular and most competitive internship choice is at a local hospital in the Azores Islands. This is a great opportunity to get a lot of exposure to a foreign healthcare system, at the same level as early-stage local medical students. As you can see some of our Fellows have ended up at top medical schools after college (e.g. UNC-Chapel Hill and Dartmouth among others): atlantis-project.org/testimonials. Further, your students can also choose (if they so desire) to complement their medical experience by teaching English and running an innovative summer academy for local kids.
