FW: PAID FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES with the Carlson Center

The Carlson Leadership & Public Service Center is pleased to announce three PAID FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES for University of Washington undergraduate students. Through the Carlson Civic Fellowship program, the Carlson Center will be able to hire three Fellows to work at three local non-profits. The host sites for 2014 Carlson Civic Fellows will be: – El Centro de la Raza (Economic Development Marketing Fellow) – Tenants Union of Washington State (Community Organizer/Educator) – YMCA of Greater Seattle, Young Adult Services (Affordable Care Act Specialist) Students selected as Carlson Civic Fellows will commit to working with their community non-profit 10 hours per week from January-June 2014 and will receive a $2,500 stipend for their work. In addition to their work with their host site, Carlson Civic Fellows will also: – Participate in two 3-credit Community-Based Leadership (CBL) courses offered through the Carlson Center. The Fellow will participate in one CBL course during both Winter and Spring Quarter. – Create a Personal Development Plan articulating goals for their time enrolled in the fellowship, and participate in regular advising sessions with a Carlson Center staff member to assess their progress and development. – Identify personal strengths and leadership styles through structured activities and reflection exercises; integrate this understanding and awareness into service with their community organization. Contact David Hlebain, 206.616.2885 or engage@uw.eduengage@uw.edu> El Centro de la Raza Economic Development Marketing Fellow The Carlson Civic Fellow will play a key role in developing and executing a marketing plan for El Centro de la Raza’s economic development programs. These programs raise needed revenue to fund El Centro de la Raza’s youth programs, human and emergency services, and community development initiatives. This position will involve writing and distributing press releases and public service announcements, utilizing social media, researching and implementing alternative and low-cost marketing methods, building relationships with local organizations and businesses and collaborating with volunteers to execute marketing initiatives. Tenants Union of Washington State Community Organizer/Educator The Carlson Civic Fellow will play a critical role in advancing the Tenants Union of Washington State’s mission of creating housing justice through empowerment-based education, outreach, leadership development, organizing, and advocacy. The Fellowship position will be focused on community organizing – talking to members of the public, conducting research, planning and facilitating meetings, and meeting with elected officials. The position will also promote leadership development among the Tenants Union’s members, and conduct community education presentations and trainings. YMCA of Greater Seattle – Young Adult Services Affordable Care Act Specialist The Carlson Civic Fellow will assist with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act as it pertains to programs within Young Adult Services. Specifically, the Fellow will support the organization’s staff in ensuring that people engaged with Young Adult Services are enrolling in health insurance options for which they are eligible. The Fellow will attend community trainings on the Affordable Care Act, disseminate relevant information to Young Adult Services staff, and work with vulnerable young people to ensure they are connected with health insurance options.
