Updates from Des Moines University Dear Ms. Clineschmidt, Happy spring from Des Moines University! We are busy as usual in the enrollment office, eagerly anticipating the arrival of new students on campus this summer. We also have several important items that we want to share with you, including information about our master of biomedical science program (applications for fall are still being accepted), an Early Decision process for our doctor of physical therapy program, our Podiatry Preview program, and this summer’s Discover DMU event.

MBS program accepting applications for the 2011 year Earning a masters in biomedical science will enable students to further develop their careers in medical and scientific research and academic medicine to benefit the health of people around the world. After earning an MBS degree, graduates are able to work as an advanced technician in the area of biomedical research in academia or industry, pursue a professional healthcare degree, enter a Ph.D program or teach at the college level. All aspects of medicine are driven by evidence-based research and the MBS program can provide the training needed to help your students achieve their goals.

MBS coursework is designed to be completed in two years. Students in the MBS program will be taking many of the same classes that the osteopathic medical students are taking, but additionally, taking a number of specific graduate-level classes. While taking these classes, students are working in a thesis laboratory and conducting experiments to support a thesis proposal. In the second year of this program, students are primarily in the laboratory finishing experiments as well as writing and defending a thesis.

For more information about the MBS program, requirements, and online application, check out our website! All application materials must be received by June 1, 2011 for full consideration. If you have questions, please contact Jean at MSadmit@dmu.edu.

Doctor of physical therapy program early decision process The Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS) is introducing an Early Decision (ED) process for the 2011-2012 application cycle that will allow applicants to apply to their first choice program through a binding application process. Des Moines University’s DPT program will be participating in this new option for applicants. Individuals will be able to apply to only one ED program in PTCAS, and the deadline for ED is August 15. Applicants must submit their application and all supporting materials to PTCAS by the deadline. Participating programs must then provide an admission decision to ED applicants by September 27.

If an applicant is accepted into their ED program the applicant will not be permitted to apply to other PTCAS institutions. If the ED program denies or moves the applicant to “regular” status, the applicant will be allowed to apply to other programs in PTCAS.

We are excited about this new opportunity, especially for individuals who know that DMU is their top choice! PTCAS will have more information regarding ED on their website beginning in June. If you have questions, please contact Katie at ptadmit@dmu.edu.

Podiatry Preview Our College of Podiatric Medicine & Surgery hosts a 2-day summer program for students interested in exploring this career in health care. Students participate in hands-on lab demonstrations, experience campus and student life, and shadow a podiatrist. Most travel, lodging and meal expenses are covered by Des Moines University. Please encourage your students to check out the Summer Podiatry Preview at DMU!
