Seeking undergraduate students to help ophthalmologists prevent blindness in newborns

My name is Jocelyn Lam and I am a 4th year medical student at the University of Washington and will be staying to complete my residency in ophthalmology.

I am involved in a service project with some of the ophthalmologists at Seattle Children’s that involves preventing blindness in newborns. A group of ophthalmologists from Seattle Children’s is hoping to travel to rural China this year to screen for treatable eye diseases in newborn infants who would otherwise go blind. However, they need help to raise money to support this project. That’s where you can help.

We are seeking students (ideally pre-health students but any undergrads are invited participate) to lead an effort to raise money for this project. Students would be directly in contact with one of our faculty ophthalmologists who is available to become your mentor. You may also have the opportunity to interact with our ophthalmology residents and medical students from our ophthalmology interest group. Every little bit that can be raised will be extremely helpful to help prevent permanent blindness in babies.

Please consider this excellent opportunity to gain experience in global health, medicine, service, and primary care ophthalmology. If you are interested or have any questions, please send an email to me at jlam1214@uw.edu. We invite as many who are interested in participating. Thanks.

Sincerely,
Jocelyn Lam
