UW Medicine Medical Assistant Apprentice Program

UWMC is excited to announce new opportunities for the Medical Assistant Apprentice Program in October 2019! This is a fully paid and benefited, on-the-job training program that will prepare apprentices to become a Certified Medical Assistant. The goal of this program is to offer staff opportunities for professional growth and advancement, and to create an internal pipeline for quality MAs trained to UW Medicine standards. MAs are an essential part of the care team who work closely with healthcare providers to provide exceptional patient care and service. MAs help prepare patients for examination, gather patient information including vital signs and health history, assist with procedures, and communicate and coordinate with patients, families and other members of the care team via phone and email.

Overall Program Details:

  • Apprenticeship positions are full time and paid $3331 per month with benefits
  • Apprenticeship program duration is 1 year; apprentices agree to work for UW Medicine for 2 additional years (3 years in total)
  • Upon satisfactory completion of apprenticeship, the apprentice will be hired into a MA position at $3576 per month
  • At least 6 Medical Assistant Apprentices will be hired for UWMC
  • MA Apprentices will be primarily based in one clinic but will rotate to other clinics to acquire a diverse range of skills across different practices
  • Clinics are selected based on interest, range of skills practiced, and availability of an appropriate coach

Medical Assistant Apprentices:

  • Are paired with a coach for the entire 1 year program
  • Successfully complete:
    • 2000 hours of clinic work
    • Weekly online course work (done outside of clinic)
    • 3 Saturday lab days to demonstrate understanding to online instructor (done outside of clinic)
    • Certification exam (taken 6 weeks after completion of apprenticeship)

Coaches for the Apprentices:

  • Are current Medical Assistant Leads or Medical Assistants with at least 2 years of experience, demonstrated enthusiasm, and training expertise
  • Commit to the full 1 year program and will complete a 1-2 day coaching class
  • Participate in the apprentice placement process
  • Receive a $1.50/hour premium for the first 6 months and a targeted premium during months 7-12 for hours spent coaching or prepping
