Writing Center Policies

The goal of the Writing Center's policies is to make tutoring available to all students in as fair a manner as possible. If you have questions or concerns about this policy, please contact the Writing Center Director at writdir (at) uw (dot) edu.

Appointments: Students are limited to scheduling no more than two appointments per week; however, they are welcome drop in for additional sessions.

Drop-ins: Students are welcome to drop into the center during our quarterly hours of operation. Drop-ins are seen on a space-available, first-come-first-served basis. Students are encouraged to drop-in even if the posted schedule is full: there is often a tutor available who may be able to accommodate drop-ins.

Canceling Appointments: To cancel an appointment, log onto the appointment scheduling page, and click the "See Your Appointments" link on the left. Enter your student UW Net Id (NOT your student number), then when the dialog box opens, click "cancel."

Missed Appointments and Late Cancelations : If a student misses two appointments during the academic year without canceling his or her appointments in advance, the student will not be able to sign up for additional appointments for the remainder of the academic year. Appointments canceled less than 90 minutes BEFORE the appointment is scheduled to begin are recorded as a no-show/missed appointment.

When a student misses an appointment, s/he is contacted via email and informed of the Center's missed appointment policy. If a student fails to show up for or cancel their appointment in a timely fashion a second time during the academic year, the scheduling system will not allow that student to sign up for additional appointments for the rest of the academic year. Students who have been blocked from appointments may still use the center but only on a drop-in basis (see above).

Lateness: If a student is more than five minutes late for an appointment without having made prior arrangements, tutors will see other students who are waiting for a drop-in session.

Format of work: You must bring a hard copy of whatever you would like to discuss: if working on a draft, please bring whatever you have on paper, and if you are working on brainstorming or outlining, please bring a copy of the assignment, any notes you took when the assignment was handed out or discussed in class, and any written work of yours that you would like to discuss. The nearest computer lab with a printer is located in Smith 220 and requires that you have money on your Husky card. Additionally, there are numerous printing stations in Suzzallo and Odegaard.
