Weight-for-length and BMI-for-age

Weight-for-length, body mass index (BMI)-for-age, and weight-for-stature are all used to compare a child's weight to his or her height.

  • Weight-for-length is used for infants and children under the age of 2 years
  • Body mass index (BMI)-for-age is used for screening children between 2 and 20 years of age. The WHO charts also include a BMI-for-age option, however use of the BMI-for-age growth chart is not recommended for children younger than age 2 years at this time.
