Admissions
Students seeking admission to the STSS Certificate program must have been accepted to a UW master’s or doctoral program. Students applying to the Certificate program must have demonstrated an interest in and knowledge of STSS in either their previous coursework or research.
Applications
Prospective certificate students should submit a statement of interest with their application outlining how their research interests relate to the broad interdisciplinary area of STSS and how participation in the certificate program will advance their PhD or MA program of study. Students with a clear understanding of the relevance of STSS to their larger graduate program of study are the students who are most likely to be successful in the certificate program.
Admission procedure
An application consists of a completed online survey, statement of intent, and a vita or resume. Students interested in the Certificate who are entering a graduate program at UW next Fall should contact one of the coordinators about applying for admission.
- Online survey asking the following information:
• Name
• UW e-mail address
• UW program
• the year you started your UW degree program
• name and email address of your faculty advisor/GPA
• prior coursework of relevance
• prior coursework you propose to be applied to program requirements
• Two to three suggestions for certificate program Faculty Mentors (should not be current members of your departmental graduate committee) - A statement of interest and intent (up to 500 words). Your statement of intent should describe your research, teaching, and/or engagement interests; how you imagine developing those areas of interest through the certificate program; and how this course of study augments your work in your home department. It should address relevant personal and/or professional background you bring to the certificate program, as well as questions (practical, theoretical, ethical, political) that might shape your progress through it.
- A resume or curriculum vita
Application Review: Applications will be reviewed during Spring quarter by the steering committee. An STSS advisor will be assigned to each of the students admitted by this committee; except in unusual circumstances, the STSS advisor will not be a member of the student’s supervisory committee.
