This 70 year old female underwent emergency sigmoid resection and colostomy

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
9.) What laboratory tests will you order?

Laboratory studies:

  1. BUN and creatinine: BUN will rise more rapidly with prerenal causes such as volume depletion.

  2. Urinalysis: specific gravity, presence of casts

  3. Urine sodium: <20 meq/L in prerenal causes and >40 meq/L in renal or
    post-renal causes

  4. Fractional excretion of sodium: <1 in prerenal causes and >3 in renal causes
