Appropriate diagnostic evaluation:
- Barium swallow / upper GI series:
Esophageal motility, stricture, status of gastric emptying
- Esophagogastroduodenoscopy:
Presence and length of esophagitis; detection of carcinoma or Barrett's esophagus; detection of peptic ulcer disease
- Esophageal manometry:
Evaluate lower esophageal sphincter (normal pressure >6mm Hg)
- 24 hour pH monitoring:
Not needed if typical symptoms and erosive esophagitis at endoscopy
