6.) What are the types of hiatal hernias? What are the characteristics of each in presentation and complication?

Hiatal hernias:

  • Sliding hiatal hernia:

    Herniation of gastroesophageal junction into the chest with no true hernia sac; symptoms of heartburn, dysphagia, and regurgitation


  • Paraesophageal hernia:

    Fundus of stomach herniates alongside the esophagus into the chest and the gastroesophageal junction is in the correct place; symptoms of chest pain, bloating, dysphagia, and respiratory problems
