A 28 year old with acute upper abdominal pain

CLINICAL CASE: |
A 28 year old man studying for his Ph.D. presentation developed the acute onset of sharp upper abdominal pain at 0415 hours this morning. The pain is accompanied by mild abdominal distension and nausea but no vomiting. On presentation to the emergency room he is anxious but awake and alert. He has no significant past medical history.
