9.) What is the medical management of Crohn's?
|
In the medical management of Crohn's disease, the aim is to reduce inflammation in the bowel, promote symptomatic relief, and correct nutritutional disturbances. Initially the 5-ASA products may be used. Antibiotics may be added to this. If this treatment is failing, corticosteroids are added. Steroids are started earlier in acute severe exacerbations. Immunosuppressive agents such as 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) or azathioprine may be given to allow weaning from steroids. The newest drug is Infliximab.
