DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1.) What are the screening strategies for colorectal cancer?

Screening is for asymptomatic individuals. Screening strategies include:

  • Tests for fecal occult blood annually - may have false negatives and false positives - lowers stage of disease at time of diagnosis which translates into better survival.

  • Digital rectal exam annually after age 50

  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy - suggested every 5 years after age 50

  • Barium enema + sigmoidoscopy every 5 years

  • Colonoscopy - suggested every 10 years after age 50 - important diagnostic test.

  • Virtual colonoscopy
