7.) What is the surgical procedure to resect a pancreatic cancer in the head of pancreas? What is resected and how is reconstruction accomplished?
|
The surgical procedure to resect a mass in the pancreatic head is called a Whipple procedure. This includes resection of the head of the pancreas, the duodenum, the antrum of the stomach, and the distal common bile duct. A cholecystectomy is usually also done. The reconstruction includes a pancreaticojejunostomy, choledochojejunostomy, and a gastrojejunostomy.
