- Superficial spreading: anywhere except hands and feet; flat in appearance; long radial growth phase before vertical growth begins.
- Nodular: darker and raised; lack of radial growth peripheral to vertical growth; all are in vertical growth phase when diagnosed.
- Lentigo maligna: mainly neck, face, back of hand in elderly; surrounded by dermis with heavy solar degeneration; invasion occurs late.
- Acral lentiginous: palms and soles and subungual region; most common type in dark skinned people.
