6.) What are the causes of intussusception in young children? In older children and adults?
|
In young children, the cause of the intussusception is idiopathic and cannot be determined. These children may have enlarged mesenteric nodes or Peyer's patches. Under age 2, only 5-10% of children have an anatomical lead point.
In older children, there is more commonly a lead point. The most common lead point is a Meckel's diverticulum and other causes include polyps, duplications, or lymphomas. By age 4, 50% of children have an identifiable lead point.
In adults 95% have a lead point and over half of these are malignant.
