BURNS AND CRITICAL CARE
Case #4 -
A 28 year old with severe trauma

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
5.) What is the basic pathophysiology in ARDS?

The basic pathophysiology in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is injury to the alveolar-capillary membrane which results in increased capillary permeability and alveolar flooding, type II pneumocyte injury and reduced surfactant. The result is decreased compliance and collapse of lung segments with shunt and V/Q mismatch.
