Case #7 -
A 70 year old female with passing bright red blood per rectum

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
3.) What are important aspects of the physical examination?

Physical examination: mass or tenderness on abdominal examination, anal disease, appearance of rectal contents when digital rectal exam is done. Anoscopy and rigid proctoscopy are done to rule out anal or rectal source of bleeding. A nasogastric tube should be inserted to rule out the possibility of an upper GI source of bleeding. An upper GI source is eliminated only if bile stained gastric contents are recovered. .
